Sitara's Story:

It’s no secret that mental health issues in the South Asian community is often reduced to something that is so minor, irrelevant and most worryingly, looked down upon. It can be perceived as a dramatic act, an act of laziness, an act that doesn’t really classify as a problem and one should just ‘get over it’. If a family member is diagnosed with a disease, bodily impairment or life-threatening illness is it that easy to just ‘get over it?’ How can we apply the same treatment to mental health when prominent disorders are chemical imbalances in the brain that trigger these emotions, thoughts or behaviours? It must be treated just like any other health condition: by seeking medical help, undergoing proper treatment and a wealth of love and support from family and friends. To do this, we must speak about it: loud and clear.

The fact remains that mental health issues are increasing at an alarming rate, with 1 person taking their life every 3 hours in Australia. That’s over 3000 lives per year we could have saved. The pressures, challenges and emotional turmoil that gravitate some lives can transform into a perpetuating cycle. Sometimes, it can feel like you are unable to escape from it. This feeling could be experienced by your best friend, your neighbour, your partner, your child or your parent. Maybe you don’t even know about it. It’s time we face fact to the reality of mental health and the life-threatening consequences that can come with it. We must always check up on our loved ones, workmates and even strangers who may look a little down. We can’t just ignore it. It’s the best start in showing we genuinely care for them and most importantly, letting them know they are NOT alone and that IT’S OK NOT TO BE OK. We must break the stigmas associated with mental health! No one should have to suffer in silence.
