Raman Samra's Story:

There has always been a dichotomy between my professional life as a counsellor and Art Therapist and my personal life as someone who struggles with mental illnesses. Working in the mental health field we are constantly discussing mental well-being, emotional intelligence, self-care, and various coping skills. Existing in the Indian community, however, this conversation is often lacking, or swept under the rug. The stigma that exists is stunning in its intensity and often the biggest element that hinders people from openly discussing their struggles and getting professional help. In the same way that there is no shame in going to the doctor to mend a broken arm, there should be no shame in speaking to a counsellor to access support for mental well-being. The most courageous act we can perform is not to show a false sense of “strength” through silence, but rather to come together as a community and share our stories to reduce the stigma of mental illness.
